Salem State University lifts shelter-in-place order after armed suspect is arrested
Salem State University has lifted a shelter-in-place order after police arrested an armed suspect Thursday evening.According to a statement from a school spokesperson, the university issued a shelter-in-place order after reports surfaced of an individual armed with a rifle on South Campus.The spokesperson said Salem State has alerted its university community that the suspect is in police custody and that they may resume normal activities.Salem police said they received a call for a suicidal man with a gun who was possibly on a motorcycle.Shortly after, police received another call for a man in the Forest River Conservation who was armed with a rifle and wearing a helmet. Parts of the conservation area are within a mile of Salem State's South Campus.After a quick search, police said the man was found on the MBTA train tracks. The man was cooperative and the rifle was recovered, according to police. Police said there is no threat to the public at this time.Officials told WCVB that the man is not believed to be a student at the school.
