Main Street Construction - Newark

Newark is trying to shed the image that it's a pain park downtown amid all the construction on Main Street.

The city has added a new parking lot complete with 80 spaces on Haines Street between Main Street and Delaware Avenue.

Municipal Lot #7 opened Friday, January 17, 2020, where Simon Eye used to be located.

"Lot #7 provides an option for people to come downtown and patronize downtown businesses, who may have been reluctant to visit during the construction project; it will also help to reduce traffic congestion, alleviate stress on surrounding lots and provide convenience for employees and patrons of nearby businesses," city officials said in a written statement.

The city said it will continue to honor free parking arrangements with tenants Duck Donuts, Starbucks and Del One.

Parking in the new lot costs 50 cents per 30 minutes using parking kiosks or the Passport app.

Newark Municipal Lot #7 Open to the Public

The City of Newark is pleased to announce the addition of 80 new parking spaces available in the new Municipal Lot #7, which officially opened today, Friday, January 17th. The new lot is located on Haines Street between Main Street and Delaware Avenue on the property previously occupied by Simon Eye. This location is easily visible, conveniently situated, and can be accessed without having to drive on Main Street.

Lot #7 provides an option for people to come downtown and patronize downtown businesses who may have been reluctant to visit during the construction project. It will  also help to reduce traffic congestion, alleviate stress on surrounding lots and provide convenience for employees and patrons of nearby businesses. The City will continue to honor the free parking agreements with the existing tenants: Duck Donuts, Starbucks, and Del One. Similar to other municipal lots, individuals who park in Lot #7 will pay only $.50 per thirty minutes using parking kiosks or the Passport parking app. Passport app users will enter zone 19727 when they park.

The increase in parking inventory was made possible by a one-year lease with the owner/operator of Newark Main Street Acquisition Company. On January 1, 2021, both parties have the option to renew the lease for additional three-month terms.
