110 students absent from Ray St. Pierre Academy, many are sick, officials say
WEBVTT >> I DID NOT KNOW IT WAS THAT MANY KIDS, AT AL JULIANA: 110 STUDENTS AT MARRERO’S RAY ST. PIERRE ACADEMY MISSED SCHOOL MONDAY, MANY BECAUSE THEY WERE SICK. >> I JUST GOT AN EMAIL A FEW MINUTES AGO, TELLING ME ABOUT THIS. MY DAUGHTER WAS ACTUALLY SICK WITH THE FLU LAST WEEK, SO SHE WAS OUT FOR LIKE A WEEK AND A HALF. JULIANA: OUT OF 110 STUDENTS ABSENT, 54 CALLED OU 56 WHO DID SHOW UP ENDED UP LEAVING EARLY, EITHER BECAUSE THEY GOT SICK, OR BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS WERE SO WORRIED. AS ARE NEIGHBORS. >> MADE ME NERVOUS, BECAUSE WE LIVE RIGHT HERE. WHATEVER IT IS THERE COULD AFFECT US, AS WELL. JULIANA: SO A CLEANING CREW COULD COME IN AND SCRUB DOWN THE BUILDING. AFTERSCHOOL ACTIVITIES WERE CANCELED MONDAY. >> SHE SAID MOST OF THE KIDS WHO TYPICALLY ARE THERE AFTERSCHOOL WERE ALREADY CHECKED OUT BECAUSE THEY WERE SICK. JULIANA: JEFFERSON PARISH SCHOOL OFFICIALS SAID THEY ARE CHECKING WITH THE CDC TO SEE IF THEY KNOW OF ANY ILLNESSES GOING AROUND. IN THE MEANTIME -- I KNOW THEY’RE PLANNING ON OPENING IT TOMORROW. >> OH WO WELL, I HOPE THEY GET IT UNDER CONTROL. JULIANA: THOUGH THE K-5 SCHOOL WILL OPEN TUESDAY, SOME PARENTS SAY THEY’D RATHER PLAY IT SAFE AND JUST KEEP THEIR KIDS HOME. >> THAT’S PROBABLY WHAT I WILL DO. JUST BECAUSE THE FLU ALWAYS RUNS RAMPANT, AND THESE VIRUSES ARE STRONGER AND STRONGER, SO I WILL DEFINITELY HOLD MY KID BACK IF I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY. JULIANA: SCHOOL OFFICIALS DID SAY IT DOESN’T APPEAR ANY STAFF MEMBERS ARE SICK BUT AGAIN, THE QUESTION IS, WHAT IS IT THAT IS GOING AROUND? AS SOON AS WE KNOW WE WILL LET YOU KNOW ON-AIR AND ONLINE AT WDSU.COM. LIVE IN MARRERO, JULIANA MAZZA, WDSU

110 students absent from Ray St. Pierre Academy, many are sick, officials say
Monday 110 students either called out sick or went home early after reports of illnesses spreading through Ray St. Pierre Academy in Marrero. Jefferson Parish Public Schools communications director Ted Beasley told WDSU that 54 students were absent Monday and an additional 56 went home early, either because they became ill or there parents were concerned. There's no word on what exactly the dozens of students have contracted, though Beasley said many reported flu-like symptoms. After-school activities were canceled Monday so a cleaning crew could come in to scrub the building down, as school will still be open on Tuesday, Beasley said. JPPS has reached out to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to see if there had been any similarly reported instances in the area, and if so, if they knew what it might be.
