Editorial: Jefferson Parish community advocating for body-worn cameras
As we enter another race for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's seat, among the many issues we’ll consider, we hope to discuss a plan for body-worn cameras.
As more police departments adopt the use of body cameras, we are riveted by what we're now able to see; police officers in tense situations, particularly when force is used.
What many want to know ultimately is do body cameras change the behavior of police officers?
Well, in a recent study evaluating 2,200 officers, there was no statistical evidence that police officer behavior has changed.
That's a good thing.
Behavior shouldn't change when we know someone is watching.
What the study did show as beneficial changes was more accurate criminal investigations improved training and standards through analysis and the protection of injustice against some police officers and, equally, the public.
Right here at home, in three recent incidents, NOPD body cameras have been used to actually exonerate police officers.
With all these benefits as fact, can we convince the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office to make the adoption of body cameras a priority?
We are told it's a storage and expense issue.
But there are cost-saving benefits too ... Savings through fewer lawsuits and citizen complaints... Faster investigations ... With corroborating evidence, a reduction in time completing paperwork and more civility between the public and police officers when the subjects know they're being recorded.
This is an investment we believe will produce a great return. Which candidate will make this a priority?
