Here's how Mississippi plans to spend $37.8 million in BP oil spill money
Mississippi officials plan to spend this year's installment of $37.8 million in BP oil spill money on new and existing projects.
Gov. Phil Bryant made the announcement Tuesday in Biloxi, outlining how the state will spend money from the federal RESTORE Act, which allocates most of the penalties from the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill to the five Gulf Coast states.
The biggest project is $12 million to use the mud and sand removed from coastal areas through dredging to create new marshland across Mississippi's three coastal counties. Another $6 million will go to extend a rock dike protecting marshland from erosion.
More than half of this year's money will be spent on economic projects, including $5 million for a Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College worker training program.
