Immigrant advocates warn about a wave of arrests around the country as early as Sunday.
The Washington Post and Miami Herald reported that 10 cities are expected to be targeted in raids starting Sunday. The Herald reported those cities are New Orleans, Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and San Francisco.
This comes as President Donald Trump tweeted about Immigration and Customs Enforcement removing millions of illegal aliens from the United States.
The local U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement public information officer told WDSU, "We don't discuss future operations. For questions about the president's tweet I refer you to the White House."
New Orleans City Council President Helena Moreno called the reports concerning and said that she's working with the ACLU of Louisiana to make sure immigrant families know their rights.
In a statement, Moreno said, "I'm very concerned about reports of planned ICE raids targeting immigrant families in New Orleans this weekend. This is a such a cruel approach. So much so that according to the Washington Post, the US Department of Homeland Security has warned the White House against pursuing these raids due to risk of separating more children from their parents. I'm working with the ACLU of Louisiana to ensure that immigrant families know their rights and that they are aware of advocacy groups ready to assist."
New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell tweeted, "New Orleans is a welcoming City, where fear-mongering and intolerance has no place. All of our residents matter, all of our families help make us who we are, and the City of New Orleans will not turn our backs on any of them. We are inclusive, we are intentional, and we reject the politics of fear and the rhetoric of threats. Being a #CityofYes means embracing, protecting and uplifting all of our residents no matter where they come from or how they got here."
