NOPD: 14 car burglaries in Lakeview overnight, neighbors fed up
Some people living in Lakeview said they're fed up with crime and are ready to take matters into their own hands.
New Orleans police said criminals burglarized 14 cars early Friday morning.
Minors are accused of targeting multiple locked cars in the neighborhood, police said.
Chelsea Severio said her husband's truck window was bashed in. Severio said she is willing to pay a private security company to start patrolling her neighborhood or even do it herself.
"I just don't see anything being done or the situation getting any better it is a safety issue at this point," Severio said. "If it takes that and if it gets done then so be it."
Elizabeth Florsh's car window was also smashed.
"They are just looking for guns and cash. Something definitely needs to be done. It is frustrating."
According to the Lakeview Crime Prevention District, many Lakeview residents pay $135 a year on their taxes for extra patrols.
"I can tell you for a fact that there are more NOPD officers patrolling Lakeview per mile than any other part of the city, residential," Brian Anderson, LCPD president said.
"I think residents going on their own and trying to become police officers is a bad idea. Part of the reason that LCPD coordinates with NOPD (is) because we want that added effort versus private security. The patrolmen, the officers who are already trained, that is the better route to go. Again, if we are going to stop crime in the city as a whole something has to be done to keep these kids from going into crime there has to be consequences after they are caught," Anderson said."
Police said there have been 140 car burglaries this year in the Third District. At this time last year there was just 37.
Police said drivers should follow these important safety tips:
1. Lock your vehicle doors at all times, even when you are at home or only leaving your vehicle for a few minutes.
2. Never leave your vehicle alone with the keys inside and/or the engine running, not even for a minute.
3. Close and lock all windows and the sunroof.
4. Do not leave valuable items in plain view in your vehicle. This gives would-be burglars or thieves more reason to try to break into your car.
5. Never leave firearms in your vehicle at any time.
6. Put away any items with personal information. Or, better yet, do not leave these items in your car at all.
7. Move all valuables to the trunk before reaching your destination.
8. Do not leave any keys in the vehicle at any time, including a valet key or a spare key for another vehicle. Doing so gives criminals access not only to one vehicle, but even more targets.
9. Park in a well-lighted location whenever possible.
10. Use the emergency brake when parking to make it more difficult for a thief to take your vehicle.
