West Virginia celebrated its 156th birthday this past week and Morgantown held a belated celebration on Saturday.

High street was shut down for the birthday block party that highlighted local artists and vendors.

The event had activities for the whole family from face-painting to a craft beer fest.

This is the first "birthday party" Morgantown has held for the state in over ten years.

Organizers hope the success of this year will set a precedent for the future.

"We are very pleased with the turn out that we have had so far," said Barbra Watkins, the executive director of Main Street Morgantown "We think it's been very well received and we're hoping next year to grow it even more,"

All proceeds made during the party are going towards future mural and public art projects.
