West Virginia's first spacecraft to launch Wednesday

West Virginia's first-ever spacecraft will be launched Wednesday.

According to NASA, the Simulation to Flight (STF-1) will lauch along with 10 other CubeSats made in the United States at 11 p.m. Eastern Time. They will be launched via the "Electron" launch vehicle in Mahia, New Zealand.

The project began in February of 2015 as part of NASA’s CubeSat Launch Initiative, and its mission is to show the capabilities of software-only simulation environments developed by NASA's Independent Verification and Validation Program.

"This project has helped promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education throughout the state of West Virginia, while also demonstrating advanced emulation technologies," the organization said in a press release Tuesday.

The spacecraft was a collaboration between the West Virginia Space Grant Consortium NASA’s IV&V Program, West Virginia University and West Virginia small businesses.
