Here's where you can find rental, mortgage in Des Moines

Just last month, 1.4 million fewer households failed to pay rent compared to last year. That's according to the National Multifamily Housing Council.

IOWA, USA — As the unemployment rate soars and the coronavirus spreads throughout the country, many Iowans are being forced to find a way to pay their rent, mortgage and other living expenses.

Evictions have been halted since Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered it so in March, however the order is expected to expire on Wednesday, putting hundreds of people at risk of losing their homes.

Just last month, 1.4 million fewer households failed to pay rent compared to last year. That's according to the National Multifamily Housing Council, a national database that tracks monthly payments.

"For a lot of Iowans, they're one paycheck away from eviction. And as we know, we're at historic unemployment levels. We're at the lowest unemployment levels since the Great Depression," said Veronica Fowler with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Iowa.

The ACLU hopes the governor will extend that moratorium on evictions for at least 45 more days.

The most impacted by the coronavirus pandemic include those that work in retail, hospitality, restaurants and construction. The City of Des Moines hopes to help those workers with some much needed resources.

Earlier this month, a recovery program worth $3.3 million was launched. Over $680,000 will be allocated specifically to help monthly payments. As of Monday morning, the City is still working out the details on how rental and mortgage assistance will be dispersed.

The business assistance grant program was also extended to May 31.
