Summer of 1993, New England Dragway. That's when and where Steve knew he wanted to become a meteorologist. More than 20 years later he is extremely fortunate and blessed to be able to live his childhood dream. As a lover of math and science, Steve had a consistent interest in weather in elementary, middle, and high school before discovering you can major in meteorology. He attended Lyndon State College in Vermont where he received a bachelor's in meteorology-broadcasting and associate's in television news. He has worked as a meteorologist and reporter in Winchester, VA, Burlington, VT, and most recently in West Palm Beach, FL. He's recognized by the American Meteorological Society with the Certification of Broadcast Meteorologists.

<p>A destructive severe thunderstorm warning was issued Friday morning across northern Florida, meaning winds in excess of 80 miles per hour could have been possible, as a line of heavy weather pushed toward Jacksonville. "Destructive" severe thunderstorm warnings are a fairly new designation and are reserved for thunderstorms that carry a potential of 80 mph winds, 2.5" thick hail, or both! In this case, it was all about the straight-line wind damage potential on Friday morning.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-10 074219-1715348545833.png">Blue dots cover the map in the image above, right along the Interstate 10 corridor in northern Florida from Pensacola to Jacksonville. Each of those blue dots indicate either a noteworthy strong wind gust or damage to trees, power lines, or property. An 84 mph wind gust was recorded in Crestview, FL!</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-10 074854-1715348986221.png">In addition, there was an indicator of tornadic wind damage in the Tallahassee, FL area. However until storm surveys are completed, this will be classified as straight-line wind damage until determined to be a tornado. Because of these morning storms, thousands of customers have been left without power in northern Florida.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-10 075245-1715349174596.png">Looking ahead for the rest of today, there are two bulls eyes for potential severe weather. One focal point with a higher potential of severe storms will be the same I-10 corridor in northern Florida which we just discussed. The other corridor for storminess, at least the highest potential, will be across the Carolinas. There, larger hail will be an issue. Whereas in northern Florida, it will be mainly about the damaging wind potential.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-10 075500-1715349307194.png">Additional thunderstorms are expected to form along a cold front as it moves through the Southeast U.S. this afternoon. The cold front will tap into record heat that has been felt across the Southeast this week. The heat will provide ample fuel for these storms. <p>The Aurora Borealis is about to put on a spectacular show, according to scientists from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC). Get ready for the aurora as far south as Alabama and northern California on Friday night, May 10th. NOAA's satellite captured the moment of a Coronal Mass Ejection on the sun on Wednesday, May 8th which is responsible for the geomagnetic storm expected on Earth.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/VO_060924_GOES 16 SATELLITE_ERUPTION FROM THE SUN CAPTURED THIS AFTERNOON_NOAA_MS_E050924-1715295549293.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Auroras are ribbons of brilliant light that usually appear around the northern latitudes when charged particles from the sun hit Earth's magnetic field. The particles shed energy as they collide with our atmospheric gasses, giving the aurora a spectacular glow of colors. Aurora Borealis is seen away from our poles and over the northern latitudes during stronger solar events, like on Friday night. A geomagnetic storm of level 4 (the scale continues to 5) is predicted on Friday night and is THE FIRST G4 WATCH issued since 2005 signaling the rarity of such events.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788641891908534279" src="https://twitter.com/NWSSWPC/status/1788641891908534279"></div><p>If you're hoping to see the aurora, you may have some trouble if you live in the Northeast. Thick cloud cover may shroud the ribbons of light. The best time to view will be in the early morning hours on Saturday morning.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-10 092010-1715354427117.png"></p><p>While the geomagnetic storms provide the opportunity to see the aurora at lower latitudes there are major drawbacks, "[they] can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth’s surface, potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio, and satellite operations" according to NOAA. They are a result of multiple coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that have been released from the sun starting on Wednesday, May 8th, and will arrive in Earth's magnetic field through the weekend. According to the SWPC, "CMEs are explosions of plasma and magnetic fields from the sun’s corona. They cause geomagnetic storms when they are directed at Earth. The typical time it takes for a CME to arrive on Earth is between one and three days.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/space weather scale-1715295005040.jpg">According to NOAA, "a large sunspot cluster has produced several moderate to strong solar flares since Wednesday at 5:00 am ET. At least five flares were associated with CMEs that appear to be Earth-directed." The tail end of a stalled out front will cause storms to linger in southern Texas on Friday. Another storm system will push in from the west, keeping the stormy pattern through Mother's Day.</p><p><strong><em>RELATED ARTICLE:</em></strong> E<a target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" href="https://www.weathernationtv.com/news/hurricane-force-winds-possible-for-georgia-alabama">arly Morning Tornado Warned Storms Damage Florida's Panhandle</a></p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-10 080614-1715350044976.png">A cold front will sag into southern Texas slowly through the day. South of the front, instability will build in the Hill Country, providing energy for storms to build. The I-10 corridor from San Antonio to Sonora and south to the Mexican border will begin to see storms firing after lunch. Thunderstorms will be widely scattered in nature, but those that do develop will pack a punch. Gusty winds and large hail are the primary threats.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 13-25-56-1715283017394.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><h2>WEEKEND SEVERE OUTLOOK</h2><p>A cut-off low in the jet stream will finally eject east out of the Four Corners states and through the southern Plains this weekend. The Big Bend region will see isolated storms on Saturday, but the threat will become more widespread as Gulf of Mexico moisture enters the picture for Sunday and Monday.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-10 081147-1715350414040.png">Southerly return flow will build moisture and energy into central and east Texas into Mother's Day. Leftover storms from Saturday will push east across Texas, limiting the amount of energy available for stronger afternoon storms. A dry line (boundary between dry air to the west and Gulf moisture to the east) will build and be available to spark storms for the afternoon. The area between the dry line and the muggy morning storms will be the best location for afternoon thunderstorm development, where the Storm Prediction Center has placed a Marginal risk. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-10 081210-1715350849067.png">These additional storms are plaguing an already saturated landscape. The areas shaded in blue in the map below highlight places that have seen 3 times the normal amount of precipitation in the past 30 days! There aren't many spots for the additional rainfall to go, other than swollen waterways.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-10 083037-1715351450021.png">An additional 2-5" of precipitation will be possible in parts of Texas and Louisiana through Sunday, before the system moves to the Gulf Coast states.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Screenshot 2024-05-10 083027-1715351450024.png">  </p>

More Severe for Texas Into Mother's Day

<p>The snow has been falling in the Northwest all week with over 2 feet in Wyoming and a foot plus in Montana. Now, our area of low pressure responsible for the winter-like weather is sliding back to the south and west, breaking off from the main flow and impacting the 4 Corners region with snow for the highest elevations and rain showers for lower elevations. Upwards of a foot of late Spring snow is possible for the highest peaks of Colorado.</p><div class="fb-post" data-href="https://www.facebook.com/WeatherNation/videos/1261262411517962" data-width="500" src="https://www.facebook.com/WeatherNation/videos/1261262411517962" style="display: flex; justify-content: center"></div><p></p><p>As low-pressure regresses (moves back to the west), the snowfall spreads south into northern New Mexico, the ranges of Utah, and even northern Arizona. Showers and snow showers are possible through the weekend, especially in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Pop-up storms will be the focus for the Eastern Plains of Colorado, New Mexico, and west Texas through Monday morning before our low-pressure system gets a kick to the east.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Baron 2-1715304996165.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Rough estimates show the heaviest of the snowfall in the Rockies of Colorado and the Sangre de Cristo range into northern New Mexico. Rainfall will be on the order of 1-2" in isolated pockets. Snow Falls in the West, Impacts to Colorado

<p>Temperatures are rising in the Pacific Northwest as a ridge of high pressure will dominate the pattern through the weekend! There is a low-pressure system that works to keep the 4 Corners cool and cloudy, but eventually, the pattern spills east, bringing a warmup to much of the West Coast. Many cities including Portland could tie or break records on Friday! We will run about 20 degrees above average. </p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 13-48-17-1715284537744.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Our warmest day will be Friday where widespread high temperatures along I-5 will be in the 70s, 80s and even close to 90 degrees! Enjoy this warmth while we have it - temperatures start to dip into early next week along the Coastline. Meanwhile, our warmest days in the northern Rockies will be Sunday into Monday as we see increasing sunshine and warmth thanks to the area of high pressure. </p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/3 day-1715284291559.jpg">It's not just the northern Rockies that will see a warmup, temperatures in Colorado and New Mexico and Utah will climb through the weekend. The warmth arrives a bit sooner for those in So-Cal, Nevada, and Phoenix with the mercury climbing towards 100°!</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/sw warmth-1715284251507.jpg">With the incoming warmth, we expect snowmelt to occur this weekend, which could stress local rivers, creeks, and streams. Be prepared for high, swift-running water, and stay away from strong currents. Temperatures Climb in the Northwest

<p>This weekend will be wet and cool in the Northeast thanks to a weak clipper that will slide through the Great Lakes and into the Northeast on Friday and Saturday. There is enough moisture to support a few rain showers and certainly cloud cover which will keep temperatures on the cooler side.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/2024-05-09 08-34-51-1715266248443.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video><p>Highs could be at record cool levels - only in the 50s along the Jersey shore. It will feel more like March than May this weekend! We hope you haven't put away your warmer gear yet.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/temps-1715266454199.jpg">A few stronger storms are possible in Wisconsin and Minnesota with severe weather potential. The primary threat will be damaging winds and hail.</p><p><img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/severe gl-1715276611162.jpg">Rain showers won't be anything to write home about but more of a nuisance for many cities in the Great Lakes Friday afternoon and evening and in the Northeast throughout the weekend. We won't see widespread heavy rain, but the focus for more consistent rain will be in western NY, PA, and New Jersey. Accumulations will be on the order of 1-2" for central Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. These areas are generally saturated after recent storms so the flood risk for rivers, creeks, and streams will be elevated.</p><video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/05/Baron 2-1715305304025.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>

Weekend Forecast: Feeling Like March in the Great Lakes, Northeast

<p>The primary concern from Wednesday's storms was damaging winds and tornadoes, unfortunately, both of which occurred over the populated mid-South, hitting the southern St. Louis suburbs and communities both north and south of Nashville. Multiple, confirmed tornadoes hit the mid-South on Wednesday creating widespread damage and destruction. The National Weather Service in Nashville confirmed an EF-3 tornado in Columbia, south of the city. </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788392193054400999" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788392193054400999"></div><p>There was a tornado emergency issued along I-65 south of Nashville for the tornado seen at the top of the page. The county declared it a "mass casualty" event following the storm meaning that massive amounts of resources were needed to rescue people from trapped and collapsed buildings. Our field crews were on the scene soon after the storm showing roofs ripped off homes and major trees collapsed. </p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788380868438081823" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788380868438081823"></div><p>Earlier in the afternoon, Clarksville, TN was hit by multiple tornadoes. This area of Tennesee is still recovering from an EF-3 that killed nine in December of 2023, less than 3 months ago. The tornado that hit the south side of the city just before 4 PM on Wednesday was responsible for additional damage in communities north of Nashville.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788403520871526644" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788403520871526644"></div><p>There was an elevated threat of tornadoes, hail, and damaging winds. The "significant" severe threat included Nashville, Huntsville, Jonesboro and Fort Smith for EF-2 or stronger tornadoes. Late Wednesday night the city of Huntsville, AL was at threat of multiple tornadoes, just minutes apart. We are waiting to hear more about damage in the northern Alabama city.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788407951226438034" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788407951226438034"></div><p>Not only was severe weather a threat but also flash flooding - the weather balloon launch in Nashville on Wednesday showed about twice as much moisture throughout the atmosphere vs normal (about 1.5" of precipitable water). With a few rounds of storms over some of the same locations, grounds became saturated with upwards of 4" of rain in 24 hours. A flash flood emergency was issued in Springfield, TN along the Kentucky border due to the fast water rise.</p><div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1788524315740082492" src="https://twitter.com/WeatherNation/status/1788524315740082492"></div><p>Wednesday was another extremely active severe weather day with multiple confirmed tornadoes spread across the Midwest and Midsouth. There was a <strong>MODERATE</strong> risk from the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) which is a level 4 out of 5 threat. Mid-South Cleaning up After Tornadoes, Flooding Wednesday

A remarkable stretch of hot weather has baked Hawaii for the last month, with little sign of the heat backing off anytime soon.

Honolulu, the Aloha State's capital city, had either tied or set record highs for seven straight days through Tuesday, with another on Wednesday looking likely.  If you broaden it back out to mid-May, Honolulu has recorded record highs in 18 of its past 35 days, through Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service office in Honolulu, the heat is largely due to warmer-than-average sea-surface temperatures and a slight disruption in trade winds.

As of last week, the laundry list of record highs was impressive, to say the least. And it was also not just confined to Honolulu and the island of Oahu, either.
