Both the state and defense rested their cases Thursday morning in the Ezra McCandless homicide trial.

She's charged in the death of 24-year-old Alexander Woodworth in March.

The jury was released for the rest of the day and will hear closing arguments tomorrow.

Judge James Peterson said he's leaning towards *not sequestering the jury over the weekend.


DUNN COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU)--Lindsey Thomas M.D., a forensic pathologist took the stand for the defense saying Alex Woodworth's injuries weren't immediately fatal, but the State says the pathologist never examined his body.

The jury has been sent home for the day and the trial will continue Thursday morning.


DUNN COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU)--Cross examination continues for Ezra McCandless as she took the stand for part of today. Prosecutors focused on her text messages and writings from Alex Woodworth's journal.

A licensed psychologist too the stand after McCandless.


DUNN COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU)--The second week of the Ezra McCandless homicide trial wrapped up, with the state resting its case.

Friday, parts of an interview with Detective Ryan Prock from the Eau Claire Police Department with McCandless were played. This one was after the body of 24-year-old Alexander Woodworth was found.

The defense began calling its witnesses this afternoon, Richard Tovar, an emergency room doctor, who talked about injuries he's seen in the ER from sexual activity, including knife wounds.

It is expected McCandless may take the stand on Monday.


DUNN COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU)--Cross- examination continues in the case of WI vs McCandless.

McCandless’ ex-boyfriend, Jason Mengla, Alex Woodworth’s roommate, Matthew Schreiner and girlfriend of Mengel’s roommate, Jenna Vandezande were among the people who took the stand today for cross- examination.

Court TV says McCandless is expected to take the stand on Monday.


DUNN COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU)--Ezra’s McCandless ex-boyfriend, Jason Mengel, took the stand and testified. He recounted the events before Alexander Woodworth’s death, including messages and conversations with Ezra.

Mengel said McCandless was "a little fired up" on the day of Woodworth's death.

Eau Claire Police Officer Mark Vang took the stand and describes the three incidents of assault Ezra alleged against John Hansen.


DUNN COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU)--Cross examination continues in the case of WI vs McCandless.

Medical personal spoke on if the word boy craved into her arm was self-inflicted.

A witness found the back of a LG cell phone near the crime scene area and officials are testifying to the details of finding the cell phone.


DUNN COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU)--The first full week of the Ezra McCandless homicide trial in Dunn County wrapped up Friday.

During today's proceedings, details emerged over the sexual assault exam that McCandless was given.

This included photos of her hands.

The state is claiming McCandless was the aggressor and did not grab the knife from 24-year-old Alexander Woodworth of Eau Claire.

In March of 2018, McCandless was arrested after police say she lured Woodworth to Dunn County and fatally stabbed him.

The trial will resume Monday morning.

DUNN COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU)--Day four of the Ezra McCandless trial has wrapped up.

Thursday, dash-cam videos were shown from an Eau Claire Police Department squad car, before the March 22 death of Alex Woodworth.

One shows officers responding to a "check person" case at Woodworth's home that day before his death.

In it, Woodworth is seen getting into a car on the passenger side, with McCandless sitting in the driver's seat.

In another Eau Claire Police Officer's dashcam, a witness is heard telling the officer that Woodworth assaulted the defendant before and was concerned when he saw McCandless earlier in the day at Racy's coffee shop.

A state witness who worked at Racy's says McCandless showed up on the day of Woodworth's death after not being around for "about a month or so."

Testimony will resume tomorrow.


DUNN COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU)--It was day three of the trial for Ezra McCandless in Dunn county.

Wednesday, the prosecution called up several witnesses to the stand, including a state trooper.

The state and defense also argued on whether several items, including copies of text messages, could be allowed as evidence in court.

Mccandless is charged with first degree intentional homicide in the stabbing death of 24-year-old Alexander Woodworth in March of 2018.

Her trial is scheduled to last three weeks.

McCandless told investigators that she started stabbing, "anywhere and everywhere."
