A Florida soldier died in a skydiving accident at the Cape Fear Regional Airport Sunday morning, authorities said.

WECT reports Sgt. 1st Class Justin Goff of the United States Army was killed during a recreational skydiving trip.

Sgt. Loyd Hames with the Oak Island Police Department called it “a freak accident” and blamed the soldier’s death on high winds.

Goff’s parachute did deploy and he did not hit anything on the way down, Hames said.

An autopsy will be performed to determine his exact cause of death.

Goff was from Florida, but the exact location was not disclosed. He was stationed in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Further information was not immediately available.
