A woman wanted for taking her daughter from Florida has turned herself in to police in Lancaster.
The girl, who was reported missing in Florida, is safe and in the custody of the Lancaster County Children and Youth Social Service Agency, authorities said.
Lisa Santiago, the girl's mother, spoke only to WGAL Wednesday morning and called what happened a big misunderstanding.
Santiago showed WGAL a court order she said she sought in September to have the 5-year-old placed in the temporary custody of her biological father while Santiago served a jail sentence for a parole violation.
When Santiago got out of prison, she thought the order no longer applied, she said. She picked up her daughter Monday night in Port Orange, then brought her to Lancaster, where Santiago has been living for about a month.
Santiago said she didn't know anything was wrong until she saw news stories Tuesday about police looking for her. She went to Lancaster police Wednesday morning.
"I decided that, in the best interest of my child, I needed to pick her up and put her in school, and that's exactly what I did. And my face is all over the news. I'm possibly going to lose my job over this. I mean, she doesn't want to go, but she has no choice," Santiago said.
Santiago is in Lancaster County Prison. She's charged in Florida with interference with child custody, which is a felony. Police from Florida will come and pick up her up, authorities said.
