PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

As of Tuesday May 26, 2020, there were at least 3,316 documented cases of the novel coronavirus in Whittier-area communities, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

There have been 139 total COVID-19 deaths in the Whittier area, where 19,595 people have been tested for the virus.

Between 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, there were 55 new cases and 5 deaths in Whittier-area communities.

The Whittier-area communities with the most overall cases of COVID-19 are Pico Rivera with 456, Huntington Park with 445, and Norwalk with 384.

MAP: This map shows how coronavirus has struck much of LA County

Outside of the Whittier area, communities in the San Gabriel Valley have a total of 5,674 cases and 304 deaths.

The South Bay has 4,375 cases and 235 deaths.

The Long Beach area has 5,280 cases and 200 deaths.

There could be more cases in any of these areas. The county is still investigating 1,940 possible COVID-19 cases and hasn’t yet released information on where those patients live in the county.

And due to the limited availability of COVID-19 tests, officials have said there are many more people infected with the novel coronavirus than are represented in these numbers.

As of 8 p.m. Tuesday across Los Angeles County, the health departments of LA County and the cities of Pasadena and Long Beach have recorded 48,778 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Of the 48,778 patients with positive COVID-19 tests, 6,283 have been hospitalized.

There have been 2,201 deaths in the county due to the virus.

Between Monday and Tuesday, there were 903 new cases and 56 deaths across LA County.

The county’s data is released in the afternoon and covers the period of time ending at 8 p.m. the previous day.

Totals for Long Beach and Pasadena are provided by those cities’ public health departments.

Community-level data from Los Angeles County includes the number of positive cases, deaths and COVID-19 tests administered along with percentages of the area’s population for each.

Cases and deaths are added to the totals based on when they are confirmed, not necessarily when the illness began or the death occurred.

Rates of infection, death and testing that are provided by LA County are age-adjusted to account for differences in the distribution of age in the underlying population, said county officials. The adjusted rates are useful for comparing rates between cities and communities that have different age distributions.

For complete totals, check the health department’s coronavirus location page at http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/locations.htm, the Pasadena site at https://www.cityofpasadena.net/public-health/news-announcements/information-on-covid-19 and the Long Beach site at http://www.longbeach.gov/health/diseases-and-condition/information-on/coronavirus.
