Car salesman, Randy Morehead, just set a big record in Topeka by selling more cars in 2019 than there are days in a year.

When Randy started working at Capital City Nissan 8 years ago, he had his mind set on breaking the record for most cars sold in a year, but he wanted to do it the right way.

He said, "When I got into this business I knew that I wanted to try to treat everybody equally and not put one over on anybody for a quick sell."

Randy said he strives to create meaningful relationships with each customer and believes that is what has helped him.

"From the time you buy a car, until you trade it in or something comes up, I'm always going to be here that's why I stayed in sales the whole time so I can have that relationship," he said.

Car salesmen in Kansas sell an average of 13 cars a month.

In order to break the previous record of 423 cars sold in a year, held by his mentor at the dealership, Randy had to sell about 35 cars a month.

"He was really good at his job and it motivated me from the time that I started, that I wanted to try to be as good as him and one day surpass it," he said.

On December 30th, Randy sold his 425th car in 2019.

He said, "To keep up that pace throughout the year, it's definitely a grind."

What kept him going was the community.

"All I can do is depend on relationships I have with the customers and the community to stand behind me, back me, refer people to me, and spread the word on social media," Randy said.

Now, he's encouraging people to continue supporting local businesses.

"There are a lot of positive things going on in Topeka right now. Not just from the perspective of my record, but the tax revenue alone that we bring in off of car sales for Shawnee County it does help the community," Randy said, "Shop local. If we can get you the best deal, try to stay as local as you can because it helps our economy in the long run."

His goal for 2020 is to sell 40 cars a month to average about 480 cars sold by the end of the year.
