Demonstrators lined a downtown Topeka street Tuesday afternoon. They want the office of the Disciplinary Administrator to investigate a Douglas County prosecutor.

Protesters from the KC Freedom Project held signs and used bullhorns to make their voices heard.

"We want the Kansas Disciplinary Administrative office here in Topeka to do their job. We want them to peruse the complaints that we have been submitting,” said Latahra Smith with the KC Freedom Project.

Smith has submitted 20 complaints for prosecutorial misconduct against Assistant Douglas County Prosecutor Amy McGowan over the past five years, and Tuesday, submitted 30 more.

Smith says only two are being investigated.

"The others they said she made harmless errors, but misconduct is misconduct," she said with anger.

Smith says their concerns have more merit after the recent release of Ricky Kidd. He was wrongfully convicted in a 1996 double murder at a Kansas City home. McGowan was the lead prosecutors in that Jackson County Missouri case.

"Serving 23 years in prison because of Amy McGowan," she expressed.

Her group will continue the protests until something is done.

"We're not asking them to do anything but abide by the law. Surely they're not above the law," she challenged.

13 NEWS reached out to the Douglas County Attorney's office for comment, but they did not return our messages.

The Disciplinary Administrator's Office told us they cannot confirm if an investigation is ongoing or if one has been done, unless wrongdoing is found.
