Portion of Hwy. 75 could soon honor Topeka Civil War veteran
Local students are lobbying to name a stretch of Highway 75 to honor a Topeka Civil War veteran who helped found several underground railroads in Kansas.
The Seaman High School Civic Engagement Club testified Wednesday before the Kansas House Transportation Committee.
They are supporting a bill to honor John Armstrong, who helped establish a lot of the underground railroad stations in the state.
"Our testimony today talk about Mr. Armstrong and his role in making Kansas a free state and establishing a lot of the underground railroad from Topeka to Civil Bend, Iowa, and eventually up into Canada," said Cole King, a Seaman High School Senior.
The high school students learned about Armstrong in class, then did further research to make their case.
If passed, the state will choose a portion of Highway 75 to re-name as the John Armstrong Memorial Highway.
