Simply tearing up your important documents and throwing them in trash is not always enough. That's why Silver Lake Bank hosted a free shred day Friday afternoon.

The main branch, off Highway 24, let anyone shred up to five boxes of important papers.

Lindsey Martin, assistant branch manager at Silver Lake Bank, said shredding your documents is a great way to fight identity theft and keep your information secure.

"It's really important that all of your confidential information gets shredded or disposed of in a way that no one else can steal it," Martin said. "Just throwing it in the trash normally is not safe because anyone can come through in your trash, the wind can knock your trash can over, pick it up, put all of your information all over the street."

People who dropped off their documents also got a free hamburger, bag of chips and a cookie. Over 505 hamburgers were served.
