Topeka Metro unveiled an upgraded bus shelter.

The bus shelter at La Colonia apartments and cottages on northeast Golden Ave. now sports a new roof covering, and extra space -- making it compliant with the American Disabilities Act guidelines.

General Manager Bob Nugent says the projects are important to the community.

"Over 50 percent of our riders are going to work, going back and forth to work, so it's really important to them,” Nugent said. “It really does drive our local economy transit, it kind of drives our local economy to a certain extent. When you invest money in transit and you invest money in amenities like this, that money comes back to you.”

This is one of several bus stop upgrades Topeka Metro has been working on around the Oakland neighborhood. The others are located at Green St. and Sardou Ave., Forest and Sardou Ave., and Freeman and Seward Ave.

Topeka Mayor Michelle De La Isla was also in attendance to celebrate the debut.
