One man is in stable condition after a shooting near downtown Topeka early Wednesday morning.

The Topeka Police Department says officers were called to the 500 block of SW Tyler just after midnight on reports of a shooting.

They say responding officers located a male victim, who was then later taken to the hospital in a private vehicle. Officials say the victim was in a vehicle when the shooting occurred.

The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries and, according to TPD, is in stable condition.

Authorities say the search for the suspect continues. The gunman is only described as a man who was wearing dark clothing at the time.

Initial reports from Shawnee County Dispatch indicated two men engaged in a gun battle in the streets of downtown Topeka and Topeka Police heard the gunfire while on patrol nearby. The Topeka Police Department also indicated there was no "gun battle" as 13 NEWS was previously told.
