Geary County ends Walk-in Accident Reporting, Topeka, Shawnee Co. and RCPD remain active
The Geary Co. Sheriff's Office activated their emergency accident reporting procedures earlier Friday, but lifted the special procedures Saturday morning.
The Topeka Police Dept., Shawnee Co. Sheriff's Office, and Riley Co. Police Dept. remain in their Emergency Accident Reporting Phase, responding to only certain crashes due to winter weather.
During Walk-In Reporting, law enforcement will only respond to wrecks involving:
- Injury, possible injury or death to any person;
- Possible impairment of a driver due to drugs or alcohol;
- Incidents of hit and run;
- Incidents where there is a disturbance between the parties involved;
- Any hazardous material situation;
- When the accident results in major traffic congestion;
- And when there is damage to a vehicle to the extent that towing is required.
Otherwise, drivers are asked to:
- Exchange registration and insurance information;
- Report the crash soon after the weather clears and Walk-In reporting ends
While it’s best to stay off the roads during snow storms and until the roads are clear, sometimes you have no choice. In those cases, AAA has recommends you keep these items in your car:
- Cat Litter;
- Snow Shovel;
- Blanket;
- Car Battery Cable;
- Hand warmers;
- Flashlight;
- Food and Water;
- Pet snacks (if applicable)
