Topeka men face federal charges following armed bank robbery

Two Topeka men face federal charges following an armed bank robbery in December.

Kansas U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister says 21-year-old Shawn Lamar Whitmore and 36-year-old Mylus Michael Oneal Jr. were arrested in connection to the incident.

Officials say Whitmore entered the Intrust Bank located at 1035 SW Topeka Blvd. on Dec. 28 with a handgun, demanded money and later fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash. Oneal became an accessory to the robbery after being found with money stolen from the incident on Jan. 2.

Whitmore was charged with one count of bank robbery and one count of brandishing a firearm during the robbery. Oneal was charged with one count of accessory after the fact, and one count of possessing stolen money.

Whitmore faces 25 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000 for robbery, and no less than seven years and a fine up to $250,000 for brandishing a weapon.

The Topeka Police Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the FBI assisted in the investigation.
