Trooper Trash Talk: Wyoming Highway Patrol stakes claim to Kansas recruit

A social media video is sparking a bit of a recruiting war between the Wyoming Highway Patrol and Kansas Highway Patrol.

Wyoming troopers shared a video of their surprise visit to second-grader Jason Murray at his Cheyenne elementary school.

"Do you want to be a junior trooper?" they asked.

"Yes," Jason replied, "but only if you let me be a Kansas one!"

What prompted the seven-year-old to lay down the law with his friends in uniform?

13 NEWS was able to track down Jason's mom, Morgan, through Facebook. Turns out, she and her husband, Zachary, are graduates of Emporia High School, with a lot of family still in the Sunflower State. Jason has always wanted to be like his great-uncle Eric, who serves with the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Zachary is in the Air Force, based in Wyoming. The WHP troopers heard about Jason's dream, and wanted to do something nice for him while his dad is deployed overseas.

Jason eventually accepted their badge. He also checked out their patrol car, jumping out with a fist pump and declaring them "the best."

Of course, that prompted WHP to inform their counterparts, "Sorry, Kansas Highway Patrol we stole this future trooper from you!"

While the troopers are having fun with each other, Morgan is simply grateful they brought joy to her son.

"Thank you so very much for doing this for Jason," she posted on WHP's Facebook page. "I really don’t have words to express how exciting this was for him and how much it meant to my husband and I. This was truly wonderful and thoughtful and generous of y’all."
