May has been a tumultuous month in America, but more importantly Iowa State basketball. After landing one transfer commitment in the month of April (Tyler Harris) Steve Prohm still had two open scholarships to fill for the 2020 basketball season.

Every player offered by the Cyclones in the graduating high school class of 2020 has officially committed to play elsewhere, as the lone player left Desmond Polk had committed to SIU Edwardsville on May 11th.

...so to the transfer portal Iowa State went.

Jalen Coleman-Lands

Iowa State was fortunate enough to land (no pun intended) a commitment from DePaul grad-transfer, Jalen Coleman-Lands.

Coleman-Lands is a 6’4” point guard from Indianapolis. Out of high school he was a consensus four-star recruit and he was even ranked as high as 37th on some recruiting sites. He had committed to the University of Illinois before transferring to DePaul following his sophomore season.

Through out his four years of playing, the Indy native has averaged 9.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, and one assist a game. Most importantly he has shot a very respectable 36.4% from three throughout his career, while attempting nearly six shots behind the arc per game. Coleman-Lands will be immediately eligible in 2020 and he should make an intimidate impact as his immense experience and sufficient shooting should prove to be very valuable for the Cyclones next season.

The Cyclones still have one open scholarship for the 2020 season, therefore there are still some transfers on the open market that may head to Ames.

• Both Gach, F, Utah

Both Gach is a 6’7” shooting guard who committed to Utah as an unranked player in the class of 2018. He attended high school in southern Minnesota, at Austin high school where he was a prolific scorer and led his school to multiple state championships.

In his two seasons at Utah, Gach averaged 9.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per contest. He even showed his potential recording 28 points five rebounds and four assists in a game vs. Colorado last season. His all around game and defensive potential would be a great addition to Steve Prohm’s roster, although he would likely have to sit one season to play one season.

Gach has reportedly heard from Minnesota, Arkansas, Nevada, BYU, Utah State, Auburn, Maryland, Vanderbilt, Creighton, Illinois, Georgetown, Oregon, New Mexico, DePaul, Gonzaga, USC and Texas Tech, but the Cyclones are rumored to be very high on his list, as he is reported to have a virtual visit set up with Iowa State.

• Justin Smith, PF, Indiana

As the transfer portal list is slowing down there aren’t many names left, but Justin Smith is one of the few to be rumored to be on Iowa State’s radar.

Smith is a former top 100 four-star recruit in the class of 2017 who plans to graduate transfer from Bloomington. The 6’7” forward was very active during his three-year career for the Hoosiers, averaging 8.4 points and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 50.3% from the field.

The Cyclones are part of a long list of teams interested in Smith’s services, but they do have a chance.

Iowa State officially offered three players from the class of 2021 in the month of May bringing their total to 21 total uncommitted players that have been offered by the Cyclones in next year’s graduating class.

• Andrew Williams, SF, Hamilton Heights Christian Academy (4-star, 140th via 247sports)

Better known as Drew Williams is a 6’7” wing from Chattanooga, Tennessee. He plays almost as a primary ball handler with guard like skills. Standing at 6’7” the gifted athleticism that Williams possesses makes him a very intriguing player in Steve Prohm’s system.

• Tamar Bates, G, IMG Academy (4-star, 97th via 247sports)

Tamar Bates is an explosive combo guard that holds offers from Kansas, Wichita State, and Oklahoma State just to name a few. He plays with a very flashy style comparing him favorably to great Iowa State guards such as, Jamaal Tinsley, Monte Morris, Tyrese Haliburton. He has a smooth left shooting stroke making him a very intriguing all around player.

• Tyrese Hunter, PG, St. Catherine's (4-star, 109th via 247sports)

Hunter is a 6’1” guard from Racine, Wisconsin who holds offers headlined by Florida, Louisville, and Creighton. He fits the Steve Prohm mold for a point guard as a very athletic player that can get his shot whenever he would like. Although the Cyclones might have to go to a recruiting battle with the “big-boys” Hunter could be a superb addition.
