A Chicago-area lawmaker introduces a controversial mileage tax before the Illinois legislature.
Rep. Marcus C. Evans Jr. (D-Chicago) says House Bill 2864 creates a pilot program that would recruit voluntary participants. It would then impose a tax on each mile those vehicle owners drive instead of making them pay the current 19-cent tax on each gallon of gas.
The voluntary per-mile usage charge would be $0.021 for each mile driven.
HB2864 now goes to the rules committee for review.
Illinois is one of only a handful of states that uses a motor-fuel tax.
