The lady Wolverines traveled to Saint Helena last Friday night to face off against the Saints. The Wolverines were coming into the game on a three-game losing streak after starting the season off by going 6-0 before taking their first loss to Lower Lake. The girls in green didn’t seem to be phased by the two-hour drive as they came out aggressive right from the tip off.
Led by Sophomore Captains Lily Barrett and Stormmie Fischbach, the Wolverines played a hard, tough defense and shot the ball well during their 40-27 triumph over the Saints. All night, the Wolverine defense pressured the Saints into turning the ball over. On offense, the Wolverines spread the floor and were able to capitalize on the clean looks at the basket. The girls in green also spread the points around with seven players putting points on the board. Barrett led the attack with 15 points, 6 steals and 3 rebounds. Freshman Emily Maxwell knocked in 9 points of her own along with 2 steals and 2 rebounds. Fischbach had 6 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Amayah Alexander chipped in 5 points along with 2 rebounds. Shelby Bowen had 3 points, and Daniele Barry and Megan Nava each had a point as well.
After the JV took the win, so did the Varsity ladies. In the first quarter of the game the Wolverines and the Saints were tied 10 to 10. In the second quarter the ladies took the lead making 17 points in the quarter and holding the saints into just scoring 2 points. After half time the Wolverines accelerated and became scoring machines. They held their defense down making the Saints only score 12 points in the second half, where our ladies scored 32 in the second half. The ending score of the night was 59 to 24.
The Ladies in green took on the Mustangs of Middletown on Tuesday last week.
The Wolverine boys did not have the same luck as the ladies when it came to the Saint Helena game. For the JV boys they were neck in neck the entire game but the boys had a hard time rebounding and shooting for the night which cost the team to lose 47 to 48. Varsity boys had a very fast paced game. Saint Helena could drain their threes, but the Wolverines held them down until the second half.
Throughout the second half of the boys game both teams were in a battle for the win, taking the lead off and on. In the last second of the fourth quarter the Wolverine boys were tied up 44 to 44 against the Saints. At the buzzer, the Saints drained a 3-point shot making the score 47 to 44. It was a very intense game and the boys are ready to redeem themselves as they too traveled to go up against the Middletown Mustangs.
