With the surge of abortion bans in the United States a protest was held at the State Capitol.

The protest's theme was a "Handmaids Tail" and their goal is to fight for abortion bans in the United States.

One of the many chants they had was, "Say it loud, say it clear, abortion rights will be protected here."

The lead organizer of the event Stacey Frausto told News Ten why she decided to make the theme a Handmaid's Tale.

"It's a dystopian where women lose all their rights completely and right now that's seeming a little closer to home and closer to reality as these bills keep getting passed," said Frausto -- "If we don't make changes soon this can become reality."

The protest had about nine speakers to talk about women's fundamental rights.

"This is a human rights issue and it's important that all hands are one deck and that we all get it and stand together for our humanity," said the speaker Michelle E. Brown.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan were one of the sponsors of this event.

"I'm not going to sit here and say that everybody's a bad person who votes against what we want, but I will say that what they are doing does not achieve their goals," said Ethan Schmitt the Mid-Michigan community organizer from Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan.

Some of those who went to the protest dressed up as handmaid's to resemble the Margaret Atwood novel.

"If I want an abortion, I want to be able to have the right to safely go and legally go and have an abortion without worrying about spending the rest of my life in prison because I didn't want to raise a baby," said protest goer Martie Gray.

Currently in Michigan there are groups backing two anti-abortion ballot drives that are set to begin gathering signatures after clearing procedural steps.
