Do you know an eighth grade student who can write?

Farm Bureau Insurance of Michigan is sponsoring its 51st annual America and Me Essay contest.

For over 50 years, thousands of eighth graders from across Michigan schools have entered the writing contest, which encourages Michigan students to write about their Michigan heroes, specifically those who have made a difference in their life, according to a press release.

This year's contest will be held from Sept. 3 to Nov. 15 and will ask students to write on the topic "My personal Michigan Hero," according to the release.

Farm Bureau Insurance says sign-up kits will be sent to schools throughout the state in late August. The contest is open to any eighth grade student in Michigan that is enrolled in a public or private school.

The contest offers various awards on the local and statewide levels. The first place entry from each school will be entered into the statewide competition where the top 10 essays in the state will be chosen. Each top 10 statewide winner will receive $1,000 cash award, another $1,000 for the school they attend, and another $500 for their school if the school is sponsored by a Farm Bureau Insurance agent, according to the release.

A special day to celebrate the top 10 winners will also happen in May of 2020. Each top 10 winner will be allowed to bring two adults and a teacher to the awards ceremony. Farm Bureau Insurance said.
