Michigan to launch campaign to boost low recycling rates

Michigan is launching a $2 million campaign to boost the state's low recycling rates.

The educational campaign, "know it before you throw it," initiative was announced at a recycling transfer station in Lansing Monday.

Officials said the goal is to let people know that they should rinse and dry all plastics, glass and metal before recycling it.

People should also not try to recycle plastic bags, which is prohibited in most cities.

"We want each individual person to have more confidence about the types of recycling that's available in their areas and what types of things can be recycled, and also how to do it in a way that reduces that contamination level," Jack Schinderle with the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, said.

Not recycling properly can contaminate the supply, meaning that it goes to landfills or adds costs for communities.

The educational campaign includes TV ads, billboards and a website.

Michigan's 15% recycling rate is the lowest in the Great Lakes region, despite the 10 cent bottle-return law.
