Spectrum says it has doubled its internet speed in central and north central Wisconsin.

The company that’s part of Charter Communications announced it would boost its internet speed for new and existing Spectrum internet customers in Wausau, Stevens Point, Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids, Rhinelander, Minoqua, Tomahawk, Crandon, Merrill, Antigo and other surrounding towns and villages.

Speeds are increasing from 100 Mbps to 200Mbps, effectively doubling its speed with no data caps, modem fees or contracts, according to the company.

The faster speed is available now to new customers, and the company said in a news release it will automatically increase speeds for current residential customers in the next few weeks. A small percentage of Spectrum internet customers will need a new modem, but those customers won’t need to do anything now. Spectrum will contact those who need a modem with details on exchanging their modems for new ones at no additional charge over the next several weeks, the release said.

Central and north central Wisconsin a growing market for Spectrum, and the company wanted to bring faster service for streaming, surfing and social media, said Ralph Newcomb, regional vice president for Wisconsin.

The company also offers Spectrum Internet Ultra for customers who want faster download speeds up to 400 Mbps.
