Does Milwaukee have enough hotels to host the Democratic National Convention?

Numerous reports have Milwaukee as the front runner to land the Democratic National Convention. Does the city and metro area have enough hotel space?

According to numerous reports, Milwaukee is the front runner to land the 2020 Democratic National Convention. "I think our chances are very positive. Very strong," said Milwaukee alderman Bob Bauman. City leaders have been cautiously optimistic - and they continue to dismiss the concerns of some, that Milwaukee doesn't have enough hotel rooms to handle a convention. The DNC reportedly required at least 15,000 rooms within roughly a 20-minute perimeter of the convention site - in this case, Fiserv Forum. Visit Milwaukee says the city has nearly 18,000, including 5,500 downtown. That's low compared to the other finalists - Houston which has 80,000 rooms, 8,000 of them downtown. And Miami Beach, with over 55,000, 8,000 of them downtown. The 2016 host city of Philadelphia lists 37,000 rooms - 12,000 in the Center City. Still, Milwaukee would appear to have more than enough rooms to meet the requirement. Those closely connected to Milwaukee's bid aren't commenting publicly in these final days before the decision - but sources echo what County Executive Chris Abele told 12 News more than two months, that the DNC is likely going over its final checklist."They want to understand just the capacity of the city to handle it. Hotels, transportation, safety, events space, all of which, I think, are boxes that we check," said Abele. The announcement of the host city is expected within the next 10 days.
