Two Milwaukee activists were arrested Wednesday night while marching to the nation's capital.
Indiana state police took Frank Nitty and Tory Lowe into custody.
They said the group was blocking traffic for miles on a two-lane highway.
Tory Lowe told WISN 12 News they've been marching the route more than a week and have never been told to stop until now.
They were stopped on U.S. Highway 30 in Kosciusko County, about 50 miles west of Fort Wayne, Indiana.
It was the ninth day of the march for Nitty and Lowe.
In a Facebook Live video, Nitty explained to police why they were marching on the shoulder and having fellow protesters drive cars alongside them in the right lane.
"I've asked you before politely to stay out of the roadway. We have no problem if you stay on the berm, along with your vehicles on the berm," said one Indiana State Police officer in the video.
"See this is our thing, with them on the side of us, cars can't speed and hit us. We've got a lot of racist white people come down here, hold on one second before you respond, we've had a lot of people swerve at us like that truck that just swerved at us earlier," Nitty can be heard saying to the officer.
In the video, the officer again asked Nitty to get out of the roadway and Nitty asked if the officer would like to speak to his attorney.
That's when the officer handcuffs Nitty.
WISN 12 News' Caroline Reinwald spoke to Tory Lowe over the phone after he and Nitty bonded out of jail.
"What's your response to them telling you guys that you had traffic blocked 6 or 7 miles behind you?" Reinwald asked.
"My response to that is we're protesting. We're walking to Washington, D.C. It's two lanes. Every other township has allowed us to take the one lane and everybody else takes the second lane," Lowe said.
Lowe called the arrests unlawful.
Police said Lowe and Nitty were charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction of traffic.
Police said Lowe was also charged with resisting law enforcement.
When asked what his message is to people watching their arrests in Milwaukee, Lowe reassured them everyone was fine.
"Don't worry about it. We got people fighting on our side. Keep us in your prayers and we going to be home after we get back from Washington, D.C.," Lowe said.
Lowe said they planned on continuing the march Wednesday night.
