A new traffic signal is expected to be operating by the end of the week in front of a high school where two students were hit last school year.

Crews worked Tuesday to complete electrical wiring on the new signal in front Jacksonville High School.

It was approved by the Department of Transportation after local leaders said drivers frequently speed through the crosswalk on Henderson Drive.

Students and parents have said traffic can get dangerous in the stretch of road that leads into a busy intersection, and there have been close calls.

The signal is replacing yield signs that seemingly didn't alert drivers enough.

The new signal will force traffic to stop with a red light during crossings.

It is expected to start operating Thursday afternoon.
