The new year will mean new residential water and sewer rates  in Augusta.

Commissioners approved a new structure that will reduce the big increase when sewer customers go from three thousand gallons to four.

And eliminates the 3000 gallon base rate on water, so customers using less pay for less.

But most customers in town use right at three thousand gallons a month and their bills will be going up.

“It just flattens the rate. Somebody who actually uses 3000 gallons…their bill is going to go up some. Most everybody else will see a decrease,” says Utilities Department Director Tom Wiedmeier.

“How much will they go up?”

“They’ll go about five dollars a month,” said Wiedmeier.

Utilities officials call the new rate structure revenue neutral meaning it is not design to bring in more money from customers.

The rates take effect January 1st.
