After Wednesday, where a man shot his wife at a dentist office, Sullivan County Sheriff Jeff Cassidy is calling one man a hero.

Larry Seagroves, who was a patient in the office and a handgun carry permit owner, shot the suspect and held him until law enforcement arrived.

News Channel 11 went to several handgun carry schools to learn more about the process of obtaining a permit. Instructors at both Unaka Rod & Gun Club and All American Handgun School told us that no matter what school you go to, all permits are issued through the Tennessee Department of Safety

Under Tennessee state law, there are several steps you must take to obtain a permit including an online portion, an eight-hour class, a written exam, and a firing phase. In Sullivan County, nearly 18,656 permits were issued last year. In Washington County, 14,070 were issued.
