SALEM, Ohio (WKBN) – The Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing in Salem is training tomorrow’s nurses, today.

There has been an increasing demand for LPNs over the next three to five years.

Christina Devlin, director of Hannah Mullins, said it’s a program that’s now in reach for a lot of people who once thought they couldn’t do it. 

To get into the LPN program, you need just a high school diploma or GED.

The Mullins program can get you trained in less than a year. It’s 44 weeks, including classes and plenty of laboratory work to prepare you for a license.

“LPNs in northeast Ohio, the average starting salary is $19 an hour, so that’s a pretty good place to start,” Devlin said. 

LPNs work in a doctor’s office. They’ll talk to a doctor and coordinate care and make assessments.

They’re also in high demand in home health care and hospice care.

There’s also the STNA program — for a state-tested nurse. That requires just two weeks of training.

You only need to be age 16. You can work for four months until taking the test and passing it.

Devlin said one student even found it changed her opinion of nursing. She came into the program because she needed a job but left falling in love with the career. 

She realized that she could do it and enrolled in the LPN program. Six students did the same thing.

The Hannah E. Mullins School is accredited. It has been a tradition since 1957, and it will lead you to a job, Devlin says. 

“Our students who are seeking employment and have passed their licensing exams, we have 100% job placement, which is amazing,” she said. 

Students are admitted twice a year.

The Hannah E. Mullins school is holding an information meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday.
