PICKAWAY CO., Ohio (WCMH) — A man and child were killed and another child was critically injured in a crash during a chase with the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

According to Highway Patrol, just after 7:30 p.m. Sunday, troopers were advised that the South Bloomfield Police Department was involved in a chase on US-23 northbound near State Route 762.

Around 7:45 p.m., troopers were told the vehicle crashed into a tree on SR 762 near Walker Road during the chase.

Troopers said Yoni Cruz Martinez, 35, of Columbus, was driving a 2014 Hyundai Elantra westbound on SR 762 at a high rate of speed when the car traveled off the right side of the road and hit the tree.

Martinez, who troopers said wasn’t wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other passengers, a 3-year-old child and a 4-year-old child, were seriously hurt in the crash and taken by helicopter to Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The 4-year-old, Rojer Lemus, died at the hospital.

According to troopers, the Highway Patrol was not involved in the chase but will be handling the deadly crash investigation.

The South Bloomfield Police Department will be investigating the chase.
