COLUMBUS, Ohio (WKBN) – Local health officials say an Ohio Department of Health director’s order about COVID-19 testing for athletes does not apply to high school sports.

The updated order was released Saturday.

Contact sports listed in the order are football, basketball, rugby, soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, wrestling, hockey, boxing, futsal and martial arts with opponents.

Section 10 of the order states players, coaches, athletic trainers, support staff and officials will need a negative test before travel and competition, no more than 72 hours before the game.

A positive test from anyone would prohibit the team from competing.

But officials say they later received clarification that the order does not pertain to high school sports.
