NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – The family of the man who was fatally beaten downtown says he was a veteran. Nicolas Christian, 30, died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center Sunday.

“He was kindhearted,” said Mike Christian, his uncle. “He’d do anything. Take his shirt off his back and let you wear it.”

Christian said his nephew served in the army for two years.

Christian was experiencing homeless and had been staying at the Rescue Mission prior to his death.

According to detectives, Christian was involved in fights with “several individuals” Saturday morning. During one of the fights, officers say Christian was knocked to the ground and continuously punched, perhaps while unconscious, until a witness intervened.

Metro police were then called to Second Avenue North and Commerce Street around 3 a.m. Saturday and found Christian with critical injuries.

Christian was rushed to Vanderbilt where he later died.
