Surveillance cameras were rolling at a convenience store in Meigs County as a 4.4 magnitude earthquake hit overnight across East Tennessee and parts of Middle Tenn.
At the Four Corners Market in Decatur, boxes in the storeroom were shaking. Soft drink cans were vibrating.
The shelves in the store were shifting. Nothing fell off because the quake wasn’t quite strong enough to cause damage or toss food to the floor. And there was no structural damage to the store.
But the shaking still caught people by surprise. They woke up to what was described as a sudden loud boom that sounded like an explosion.
The U.S. Geological Survey reports there were actually two temblors. A 4.4 and a 3.3 magnitude quake, both centered near Decatur in Meigs County.
The area southwest of Knoxville and north of Chattanooga felt the 4.4 magnitude earthquake at 3:14 a.m., with a 3.3 magnitude earthquake following at 3:27 a.m.
Viewers told News 2 the stronger quake was felt across Middle Tennessee with many reporting their frightened dogs barked a lot and woke them up.
