Tenants at Wood Village Apartments speak out

JACKSON, MS (WLBT) - Residents of a Jackson apartment complex say their living conditions are unsafe and unsanitary.

After reaching out for help and not getting any, they contacted 3 On Your Side.

For fear of being evicted, the two tenants chose not to have their names or their faces revealed.

When you drive through the complex, trash doesn’t appear to have been picked up in a while. It litters the grass and bushes.

Electrical lines hang off of buildings, and some even drag on the ground while children play just 10 feet away.

“This morning a rat came through my wall,” said one of the tenants. She has lived at Wood Village for four years.

“They were supposed to have had a maintenance guy, but he’s not here anymore,” said another tenant. She has lived at the complex for nine years.

But what worries them the most is the mold on the walls, inside the walls, in the air conditioning vents and bathrooms.

“All on the ceiling, in the hall closet, in the hallways, and everything. It’s bad,” said one of the tenants.

There are also issues with the plumbing. One tenants said the toilet and the bathtub in her apartment has been backed up for days.

“I’m talking about I even had bed bugs from all the water being on the floor," she said. “I had to get different furniture every year.”

Both residents say they have called the management office, but nothing has been done.

“She keeps saying the same thing, that they’re going to fix it and a contractor needs to come out. It’s the same thing every time,” the tenant said.

Before we could finish our interview, I was asked to leave the property.

The management office has been contacted for an interview, but so far we haven’t heard back. 3 On Your Side also reached out to the city.

According to the director of planning for the City of Jackson, an inspection team is expected to be at the apartment complex tomorrow.
