Price-gouging lawsuit between Marathon, Kentucky going to trial
A 12-year-old legal battle between Marathon Petroleum and the Commonwealth of Kentucky will go to trial in June. In 2007, then-Attorney General Greg Stumbo sued Marathon, accusing the fuel supplier of price-gouging Kentuckians in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The lawsuit claims gas prices jumped by 70 cents in the days following the disaster and that Marathon overcharged Kentuckians more than $86 million. Marathon has denied the claims and maintains the oil company did nothing wrong. The case has recently picked up steam under the leadership of Attorney General Andy Beshear, who deposed Marathon's CEO in December. We're told a mediation hearing in January ended with no resolution and the case will go to trial in June.
