What you can expect as Street Rod Nationals kicks off at Kentucky Expo Center
Classic cars rolled into the Kentucky Exposition Center on Wednesday to begin setting up for the 51st Annual Street Rod Nationals.The event is Aug. 6-9 featuring more than 5,000 vintage cars.This is the first large-scale event in Louisville since the beginning of March.Hospitality officials and organizers gathered ahead of the event to talk about safety protocols and the estimated economic impact.The event is recognized as one of the world's largest automotive participation events. More than 15,000 participants are expected to attend, leaving an estimated economic impact of more than $8 million.According to David Beck, president and CEO of Kentucky Venues, 30,000 people attended last year's event, bringing in more than $18 million for the city.Beck said they are excited to host Street Rod Nationals and feel prepared as safe practices will be enforced.Chris Brawner, Kentucky Venues' Compliance Officer said masks will be required inside and outdoors when social distance can't be maintained.He said they utilize 36 square feet per person to help determine capacity. Signage has been placed throughout the grounds encouraging masks and social distance. Hand sanitizing stations are also spread throughout.When setting up tents for the event, organizers say distance was in mind. Exhibitors inside will also be placed further apart.Karen Williams, President and CEO of Louisville Tourism said the proposal approved by Gov. Andy Beshear was approved because 95% of the event is outside.She said the economic impact will be felt by local business owners as participants spend several days in the city."The hotels, the restaurants, the gas stations. There's such a trickle down effect for this event," said Williams.
