Dover woman shot while lying in bed

DOVER, Del. – At the 400 block of Barrister Place police say one woman was shot while sleeping in her bedroom.

Margaret Wilson, a neighbor said, “I heard a ‘pop, pop, pop,’ it was loud and it sounded like gunfire.”

Residents shocked, a community stunned after shots rang out on Sunday night in a normally quiet neighborhood.

Desiree Taylor, another neighbor said,  “We were both in the bedroom when we heard gunshots. We looked out the window and someone ran by.”

Neighbors are not the only ones left at a loss for words.

Investigators are equally as shocked by the 8 p.m. shooting that left one injured and a home riddled with bullet holes.

Master Corporal Mark Hoffman with the Dover Police Department said, “This is not something we usually see. We believe at least six gunshots were shot in the area.”

Officials say one of those six bullets hit a 20 year-old woman in her left side who was at home lying in bed.  As of now, it doesn’t appear as though she was the intended target.

This is a big reason why neighbors are fearing for their safety.

Taylor said, “I told my kids from now on I don’t want them to play outside because they could have been outside [during the shooting] it wasn’t even that late. They play basketball out there pretty late.”

Wilson said, “I’m really scared because I spend most of my time in my living room right in front of a window.”

Police say their fears are justified and acknowledge that their homes, anyone’s home, should be a safe place.

It should be an area free of the threat of gun violence.

Cpl. Hoffman said, “In your home you should feel the safest of all.”

The woman is expected to be OK, as she was treated at a nearby hospital for non life-threatening injuries.

Police have yet to identify the suspect, however 47 ABC has confirmed there is no threat to the public.

Anyone with information is asked to call Dover Police at (302)736-7111.

47 ABC will continue to update this page with more information as it becomes available.
