Dover, Delaware State pitcher Garrett Lawson drafted to Angels

DELAWARE –  On Wednesday, Delaware State’s Garrett Lawson had his dream come true, hearing his name called in the MLB draft.

Lawson, a Dover High School alum, was selected by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 19th round, the 571st pick. Expecting to go to the New York Yankees in the 20th round, the left-handed pitcher was pleasantly surprised when the Angels called his name.

“I just had the draft tracker on my phone, I saw Garrett Lawson pop up and I didn’t even realize that was me,” he said. “My mom started yelling, and so did my grandma. So I was like, ‘Wow, I just got my named called.'”

Full of emotion, Lawson is excited for this next step as he moves away from the state where he spent his high school and college years.

“I’ve never been to California before, the furthest west I’ve been is [Tuscon], Arizona. I know it’s going to be a change, but I’m excited to get out there,” Lawson said over the phone.
