Half of Maine's Olympia Sports stores to close after company's sale
Maine-based Olympia Sports' sale to an out-of-state company will result in the closure of half of the stores in the state.
JackRabbit announced earlier this week that it was buying Olympia Sports, and it indicated store closures and layoffs were coming.
An Olympia Sports spokesperson confirmed Thursday that eight of the 16 stores in Maine will close as part of the sale.
The future of the company's distribution center in Westbrook and the jobs of the people who work there are still being discussed.
The store closures will be staggered, according to the company. Some will be immediate, while others will be early next year.
The company's sale and pending layoffs came as a surprise to employees.
"It was very shocking to say the least. It came right out of nowhere," said Tristan Andrew. "All I know for sure is the store I work at is closing, the one in Freeport."
Andrew said he received a letter that said the Freeport store will close at the end of January.
Olympia Sports was founded in 1975. The first location was at the Maine Mall, and that location is expected to remain open.
Olympia has more than 200 locations across the country.
JackRabbit said in a news release on Wednesday that the consolidated company will operate 135 stores.
