'Hit man' scam prompts warning from Maine police department
Police in Livermore Falls are warning people about a scam where people receive text messages and someone threatens to kill them if they don't pay up.
Police Chief Ernest Steward Jr. said it is a scam he's never encountered in his more than 40 years of law enforcement.
Steward said police received a report from a man who said he received a text message from an unknown number, threatening to kill him if he did not send money. The number was not local.
Police said the man then received a photo of himself, as well as the photos of two other people the scammer claimed were the latest victims.
Police said the two photos were stock images from an online search.
Officials said the man targeted by this so-called "hit man" scam did the right thing by going to police and not paying the scammer money.
Police said anyone who suspects someone is trying to scam them should not engage the scammer and contact authorities.
Officials also said people should take screenshots, if applicable, which can be used as evidence in the investigation.
