When a Penobscot County sheriff's deputy found an abandoned vehicle with North Carolina plates on the Access Road in Chester last week, little did he realize just what he had uncovered.
When Deputy Peter Stone called authorities in that state, he learned the car was registered to a woman from Haywood County.
North Carolina deputies had been searching for 55-year-old Patricia Papp and asked Stone to impound the car.
Police had been searching for the woman after finding the body of her mother, 78-year-old Mary Coleman Papp, in her own home on Sept. 13.
Later that week someone reported that a woman and dog had been camping on private property near Chester, but Stone did not find her.
On Friday, a retired trooper saw Papp walking along the side of the road. Deputies arrived and arrested her.
She was being held at Penobscot County Jail without bail while waiting extradition to North Carolina for concealment of a death.
Her mother's cause of death has not yet been released.
