Police release new details on Long Island killings; Maine woman was 1 of 10 victims
nvestigators released new information Thursday in a nearly decade-old murder mystery in Long Island that has connections to Maine.
Police found 10 sets of human remains along a highway in a Long Island beach neighborhood.
One of the victims was Megan Waterman, of Scarborough. She was 22 when she was killed.
Investigators in New York released a new picture of evidence found at the crime scene in hopes that it will lead to the killer.
"Black leather belt embossed with the letters 'H-M' or 'W-H' was recovered during the initial stages of this investigation. We believe that the belt was handled by the suspect and did not belong to any of the victims," Suffolk County Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said.
Waterman's family has been waiting a decade for closure in her killing. She had a mother in South Portland and a sister in Bath.
WMTW News 8 was unable to reach them Thursday for reaction to the new developments, but both have been seeking justice since Waterman was killed.
Police said Waterman was killed when she and her boyfriend at the time went to Long Island in June 2010.
Police said while in New York, Waterman worked as an escort and advertised her services on Craigslist.
Investigators have suspected a serial killer is behind Waterman's death and the other killings.
Authorities launched a website in hopes that people will share information that could lead to a break in the chase.
Hart reassured the victims' families that police have not given up on the investigation.
"There has been a tremendous amount of effort put into solving this caseand I can tell you that everyone involved is motivated by one goal to deliver justice to these victims and to give them some sense of peace and some sense of closure," Hart said.
